Why steel wool rusts: The science of iron oxide and how to stop it

Rust is more than just dirt. This is a chemical reaction. Especially iron oxide.

Steel wool is made of iron. Iron loves oxygen. When they meet under the right circumstances, they bond. As a result, corrosion occurs. The role of water in corrosion

When steel wool gets wet, water is absorbed into the small gaps between the fibers. This is an interesting part of chemistry. Water acts as an electrolyte. The oxygen electrons can now move towards the iron.

Think of the hydrogen bonds in water as acids. It gives rust the ability to corrode. The water is not just there. Facilitates transfer. It accelerates the collapse.

Salt water can make symptoms worse. Sodium promotes corrosion. If you throw steel wool into the ocean, it turns to dust faster than a freshwater aquarium. The metal weakens. When it corrodes, it releases heat. It may not feel like it on a small mat, but the release of energy is real.

Can I prevent steel wool from rusting?

You can stop reacting. All you have to do is break the chain.

Rust requires three things:
1. Iron
2. Oxygen
3. Water

Removing one side will stop the rust.

The most common method is coating. You can apply something to the steel wool to seal out oxygen and water. This creates a physical barrier. The iron is protected. The water slides down. Oxygen does not come into contact with metals.

Some people wax steel wool. Others use oil. The goal is simple. Keep the elements at bay.

What to do if it is already rusted

Discard the steel wool when it turns orange.

No need to bother with cleaning. Removing rust from steel wool is a difficult task. The fibers are very fine. The corrosion is deep. In the end, you spend more time fighting oxidation than saving the material.

Rust corrodes metal. It weakens the structure. A rusty pad reduces its polishing power. What remains is garbage. It’s not worth it.
